Interim Show Gallery House Update DEPARTMENT We have had some really intense three days in Gallery House. It has been fraught with difficultly, confusion, anxiety and I hope fun. We have battled to find a framework that we feel we can all work within. We have risen to the challenges and this brief overview hopefully highlights that. Days one and two were engaging in ongoing discussion workshops exploring different ideas and themes. The first day consisted of discussions where we developed ideas and themes that were often guided by practical activity and different presented texts. Through these discussions the idea of adhering to a company type structure emerged. This was partly driven though the various texts we were looking at, discussions in our different groups and the nature of the building itself (the 2nd floor of a 7 floor, office building in the centre of Leeds). Leading us to think about the term Department. The second day we made 2 minute presentations coming up with our own particular department title and explaining what our chosen department was about. We ended up with 25 department titles. Following on from the department presentations and discussions, on our third day. We said enough discussion, we need to get practical. So, we decided to reconfigure the space and make it (as close a practically possible) into an open plan office environment. To achieve this, we simply configured the boards (that normally form the walls) horizontally opposed to vertically fashioning booths that uncannily mimic an office space. We then spent some time combining and reducing the 25 departments down to what was felt a more manageable 9 or 10. See list below: DEPARTMENT (main heading/company) Sub departments of Department are as follows: Department of Human Resources Department of Paradox Department of Public Relations Department of Game and Play Department of Fiction Department of Sound Department of Reality Department of Micro Analysis Department of Reception Department of Human Resources Department of Paradox Department of Public Relations Department of Game and Play The idea now is that each of the office booths is aligned to a particular department. (Job for day 4) We are then being asked to present work within one or more of the departments/booths. There have been some interesting ideas introduced round the offline/real and the online/digital. We have setup a website and Celia and Steph have agreed to be responsible for upload content, under the different department headings. We can be represented in any manor we like. Solely on the 2nd floor (DEPARTMENT OFF LINE), solely online (DEPARTMENT ONLINE), or indeed both. There may well be activity taking place beyond these identified areas but we should try and use the above as a way in which these activities are archived / represented. Images of space and examples of activates thus far: What next: We now need to continue the momentum. We have come a long way in three days and achieve much. We now need to remain focused and continue to move the project forward. There are some interesting ideas and approaches and we need to remain active. • Someone needs to label each booth with a department name (for the moment this can be hand written) • Choose one or more departments that you would like to work with. Put your name against it. (write it on a sheet on paper and tape to booth) The sooner this can happen (day 4) the better. Make work. Assemble in booth (you may well wish to communicate with each other once you have an understanding of who is contributing what, where) however this is not essential. • If it is an online work then send via email to Steph or Celia.
